In fact, in many aspects it works as such. To get the meaning of medical terms, we need to break down each word into different parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medical term consists of a prefix, the root word, and the suffix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prefix appears at the beginning of the word and tells us the how, why, where, when, how much, how many, position, direction, time, or status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The root word indicates the part of the body in question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suffix, at the end of the word, specifies the procedure, condition, or disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 75 percent of all medical terms have Latin or Greek origin, so it always comes in handy to familiarize ourselves with the most commonly used prefixes, root words, and suffixes, so we can put everything together into one greater word meaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, I\u2019d like to list some special prefixes, which may look different but have the same meaning, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (= against)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mal-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (=bad or painful)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyper-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epi-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (=above)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypo-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sub-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (=below)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endo-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (=within)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are some other prefixes, which are trickier as they mean the opposite of each other, although they look or sound similar:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ab-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means away from (abduct), but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means toward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ante-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mean before, in front of, or preceding but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means after, following, or behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyper-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epi-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mean above, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypo-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infra-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sub-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mean below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macro-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means large, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">micro-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means tiny, small.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tachy-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means fast, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brady-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means slow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyper-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also mean excessive, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypo-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also means deficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing the basic prefixes, root words, and suffixes is key to understanding the meaning of a medical term at first sight!<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medical terminology may seem like a foreign language to many people.
